Laboratory Diagnostic of Avian Pathogenic Strains (apec)

چکیده

Escherichia coli is probably the most famous bacteria in broiler production .... Along with Mycoplasma, it is responsible for many economical losses (meat produced of antibiotics spent to fight against). Colibacillosis is indeed the most frequently reported disease in surveys of poultry diseases or condemnations at processing. Yogaratnam in 1995, for instance, showed that 43% of broiler carcasses condemned for disease at processing had lesions consistent with colisepticemia. Moreover, E. coli infection can have a significance for public health. First, even though most of APEC isolated from poultry are pathogenic only for birds, chickens are susceptible to colonisation with E. coli O157:H7 (an important Shigatoxin-producing, enterohemorragic pathogen of human). And characteristics of virulent E. coli in birds and other “animals” are shared, so that some studies are already suggesting that avian strains can be a source of genes and plasmids that encode for antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors. The disease itself in chicken may occur as colisepticemia, which typically leads to death. Even though some birds can fully recover from colisepticemia, some others may recover with sequelae. Colibacillosis may also be a localized infection, manifesting as omphalitis, yolk sac infection, cellulites, swollen head syndrome, enteritis, acute vaginitis, salpingitis, or peritonitis.

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli strains of avian and human origin: link between phylogenetic relationships and common virulence patterns.

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) strains of human and avian origin show similarities that suggest that the avian strains potentially have zoonotic properties. However, the phylogenetic relationships between avian and human ExPEC strains are poorly documented, so this possibility is difficult to assess. We used PCR-based phylotyping and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to det...

In vitro assessment of pathogenicity and virulence encoding gene profiles of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens

Background: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains have been associated with various disease conditions in avian species due to virulence attributes associated with the organism. Aims: This study was carried out to determine the in vitro pathogenic characteristics and virulence encoding genes found in E. coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens. Methods: Fifty-two stock...

Identification of minimal predictors of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli virulence for use as a rapid diagnostic tool.

To identify traits that predict avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) virulence, 124 avian E. coli isolates of known pathogenicity and serogroup were subjected to virulence genotyping and phylogenetic typing. The results were analyzed by multiple-correspondence analysis. From this analysis, five genes carried by plasmids were identified as being the most significantly associated with highly ...

Diagnostic strategy for identifying avian pathogenic Escherichia coli based on four patterns of virulence genes.

In order to improve the identification of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains, an extensive characterization of 1,491 E. coli isolates was conducted, based on serotyping, virulence genotyping, and experimental pathogenicity for chickens. The isolates originated from lesions of avian colibacillosis (n = 1,307) or from the intestines of healthy animals (n = 184) from France, Spain, a...

Avian colibacillosis: still many black holes.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains cause severe respiratory and systemic diseases, threatening food security and avian welfare worldwide. Intensification of poultry production and the quick expansion of free-range production systems will increase the incidence of colibacillosis through greater exposure of birds to pathogens and stress. Therapy is mainly based on antibiotherapy and...

The genome sequence of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strain O1:K1:H7 shares strong similarities with human extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli genomes.

Escherichia coli strains that cause disease outside the intestine are known as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) and include human uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) and avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC). Regardless of host of origin, ExPEC strains share many traits. It has been suggested that these commonalities may enable APEC to cause disease in humans. Here, we begin to test the hypothesis...
